Design Rangers co-owner Chris Schell said Best In Business is a valuable affirmation that the 10-year-old company has made it in Colorado Springs.

“It means a lot because for a long time, part of what we realized was we just weren’t visible,” he said.

Chris and his wife and co-owner, Jenny, are both locals, but Chris said at first they weren’t feeling the love.

“I think for a while we kind of thought, ‘If you build it, they will come’ and people will find you. … But there came a point where we realized we needed to be out there and get involved in lots of things. So [the award] feels great — if people know us out there that means we really are a part of this community.”

Chris said Design Rangers “focuses on telling people stories” and takes a comprehensive approach to a business’ messaging needs.

“We help them extract whatever their underlying story is and then we bring that forward through visuals — that could be through websites, through advertising, through branding, or creative strategy,” he said. “People oftentimes will come to us and say, ‘I need a website.’ We say, ‘Great — why?’ or ‘Tell us more about yourself and your business goals.’ We tend to dig a little bit deeper to look holistically at what they’re trying to do.”

This approach yields new insights and helps clients examine their marketing and business goals and how design fits into that, he said. Design Rangers’ clients are about a 50/50 split between nonprofits and outdoor recreation, but they work with “any business that has an underlying ‘why’ to what they do and is passionate about what they’re bringing forward.”
